After 6.96 seconds over 60 meters, 7.75 meters in the long jump and 16.77 meters in the shot put, he achieved a personal best of 2.05 meters in the high jump and goes into the second day with a total of 3,643 points.

The 60 meter hurdles, the pole vault and the final 1,000 meters follow on Saturday. The German record, which Frank Busemann has held since 2002 with 6291 points, is now within reach.

Last year, the 23-year-old had already snatched the German decathlon record from Jürgen Hingsen and finished fifth at the World Championships in Budapest.
