South Korea beat Australia 2-1 through extra time in the quarter-finals 2023 Asian Cup at Al Janoub Stadium, Al Wakrah, Qatar, Saturday (3/2) early morning WIB.

Korea dominated the game from the start of the first half. The result was that Jurgen Klinsmann’s team made it difficult for Australia to attack.

Australia, which relied on counter attacks, actually had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 19th minute. Unfortunately, the rebound ball executed by Conor Metcalfe was only narrowly beside the goal.

Korea’s pressure finally paid off in the 32nd minute. Seol Young-woo’s pass was cheated by Hwang Hee-chan in front of the goal.

However, the referee from Oman Ahmed Abu Bakar disallowed the goal. This was because Seol was already offside before passing the ball to Hwang.

Hwang In-beom’s mistake near the end of the first half had fatal consequences for Korea. This allowed Australia to score a goal scored by Craig Goodwin and change the score to 1-0.

The match was more balanced in the second half. Korea was no longer free because Australia also posed a number of threats to the Taegeuk Warriors’ goal.

Australia even got two golden opportunities through Martin Boyle. But goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo was able to counter these two opportunities in the 53rd minute.

In the 60th minute it was Korea’s turn to threaten. It’s just that Hwang Hee-chan’s efforts were still able to be secured by Mathem Ryan.

Entering the last 20 minutes of the match, Australia actually got a golden opportunity. Mitchell Duke even got an open opportunity but his header from close range went sideways to the left of the goal.

Australia, which was so close to victory, had to accept the bitter reality. Lewis Miller’s violation of Son Heung-min made the referee point to the penalty spot in the 90+4 minute.

Hee-chan stepped forward as executor and successfully carried out his duties to make the score 1-1 so the match had to continue into extra time.

Korea finally took the lead for the first time in this match in the 104th minute. Son’s classy free kick from near the penalty box went smoothly into the Australian goal without Mathew Ryan being able to block it.

Australia, which was trying to score an equalizer, was actually in an increasingly difficult situation. This was because Aiden O’Neill was given a red card by the referee after violently violating Hee-chan during the fight for the ball.

Korea, which has a superior number of players, has a number of other opportunities. However, the unsatisfactory final finish meant that no additional goals were scored until the end of the second half of extra time.
