The home defeat against KV Mechelen was yet another disappointment for Eupen this season. Not only because Eupen was actually the better team, but because according to Florian Kohfeldt and his team it should always have been awarded a penalty. And that was clearly important to him. “Enough is enough,” said afterwards.
Not for the first time this season, an angry Florian Kohfeldt appeared in front of the microphone after a Eupen game. However, after the match against KV Mechelen it was all just a little bit tougher.
“This is a big disappointment,” the coach began calmly. “We were much better and they didn’t find a solution to our pressure, but we didn’t score. That’s really the story of our season.”
Then he launched into an unprecedented tirade. “It’s another clear mistake by the ref,” he refers to a handball phase at the absolute end of the match. “Everyone can see that it’s hands, but he won’t even look.”
“They will find a reason why it wasn’t a mistake, but we really have to name it: we don’t understand why the referees never have to go to the screen when we play.”
“This is yet another decision by the association against us. I have always remained respectful, but enough is enough. This is really shameful.”
And the Eupen coach’s outburst of anger was not over yet. “We just have to get a penalty and then we will at least play a draw here. I don’t care what goes on in their heads, they just have to follow the rules.”
“The only thing that follows is a yellow card thanks to the fourth ref. The same man who robbed us in Ghent with a penalty phase. I never said anything about it, but I have to protect my players. Just suspend me for 2 weeks, it’s just not fair.”
When asked whether he had talked to the referees afterwards, Kohfeldt was also clear. “You just can’t argue with it. They always say we have to be respectful, but we aren’t always that way.”
“If you have any feeling for football, you know that referees should simply direct the football. They themselves are not important.”
“They always think: “It’s just Eupen, they won’t complain”, but we do that now. Today it’s really too much.”
