An outbreak of whooping cough has been confirmed in Guadalajara, affecting 124 people, mainly in the school environment, the majority being children. The Ministry of Health of Castilla-La Mancha reported that contact studies and the application of chemoprophylaxis and completion of vaccination was recommended as appropriate.

Whooping cough, a highly contagious infection, is characterized by a severe dry cough, followed by high-pitched sounds when inhaling. Although it was previously considered a childhood disease, it now mainly affects those who have not completed vaccination.

Symptoms usually appear 7 to 10 days after infection, starting mildly and similar to a common cold. However, a week later, the cough intensifies, leading to severe and prolonged attacks. Accumulated mucus can cause vomiting, extreme fatigue, and wheezing sounds when inhaling. In babies, the cough may be non-existent, but they may experience difficulty breathing.

Whooping cough is caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis, which is spread through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing. The diagnosis is made clinically and by searching for the bacteria in pharyngeal secretions.

Treatment, which must be administered by a doctor, may include hospitalization, adequate nutrition, sedation if necessary and, in some cases, the use of antibiotics, especially if they are administered early and in appropriate doses.

It is essential that pregnant women and those who have direct contact with babies be vaccinated against whooping cough, since Deaths associated with this disease are more frequent in babies. Given the outbreak, it is crucial to follow the recommendations of health authorities to contain the spread of the infection.
