According to police, the accident occurred around 11 p.m. (local time) in Kaptaget in the southwestern highlands of Kenya. Accordingly, Kiptum, his trainer Gervais Hakizimana and a woman were on their way to the city of Eldoret when their car left the road. The vehicle collided with a tree and ended up in a ditch, the newspaper cited Daily Nation the responsible police representative Peter Mulinge. Kiptum and his trainer were killed in the accident. The woman was taken to the hospital.

The cause of the accident is still unclear. Police said no other vehicle was involved in the accident.

World Athletics Federation President Sebastian Coe said he was “shocked and deeply sad.” “An incredible athlete leaves an incredible legacy, we will miss him greatly,” Coe wrote on Platform X.
