Karolina Pliskova Reclaims Success in Cluj Napoca Tournament After Four Years

The Czech Karolina Pliskova, who became number one in the world on the women’s circuit, was reunited with success in the Cluj Napoca tournament (Romania), where four years later she won a title after beating the local Ana Bogdan, eighth favorite, by 6-4 and 6-3.

The 31-year-old Pliskova, who moved to the top of the world rankings in July 2017 and maintained it for nine weeks, was facing her first final since 2021, the year she lost those in Wimbledon, Rome and Montreal. Her last title so far, her sixteenth, was in Brisbane, in 2020.

The Czech carried out her 33rd final without any setbacks to seal, after one hour and twenty-six minutes, her seventeenth trophy against a rival with whom she had never lost. She beat her on clay, in Bad Gastein (Austria), in 2014 and at the 2018 United States Open and the Doha tournament last year.

The Romanian aspired to her second title after the one achieved in Parma in 2023. However, in Cluj she suffered a new defeat in a final just as happened in Warsaw in 2022.
