The 24-year-old impressively beat Varvara Gracheva from France 6:3 and 6:0 on Monday (local time) – and will now face the top seeded American Jessica Pegula.
Niemeier had reached the main draw at the event in California by defeating Claire Liu (USA) (6:4, 6:2), and now a high hurdle awaits the Dortmund native.
The second German in San Diego is Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau), who will meet Leylah Fernandez (Canada) in the first round.
