José Sirí (Gigantes)’s goal is to steal 30 bases in 2024, reports Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times morning newspaper.

Siri focused on adding power to his game in 2023, and recorded a career-high 25 home runs in just 364 plate appearances.

He has elite speed, but will need to improve his career .273 on-base percentage to be a more consistent threat on the basepaths.

Batting practice

Gary Sanchez (Esgido) took batting practice Wednesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Sanchez took his first BP of the spring, as he is slightly behind the other Brewers position players in camp due to the right hand issue he suffered in an offseason workout.

The 31-year-old, who previously fractured his hand in September, took part in a live batting practice session on Tuesday.

Will play on Saturday

Mariners manager Scott Servais said he expects Julio Rodríguez (Esído) to play in Saturday’s Cactus League game against the A’s, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reported.

According to Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM, Rodriguez made some changes in the batting cage and possibly on the backfields of camp on Wednesday as he continues to improve following a bout with inflammation in his left hand.

Rodriguez was also able to play in the outfield on Tuesday, so wearing a glove on the injured hand apparently isn’t too bothersome for the 23-year-old.

It recovers

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Gregory Santos (Stars) came out fine after catching some balls on Tuesday, Seattle Sports 710 AM’s Shannon Drayer reports.

According to Servais, Santos was throwing hard while catching, but has not yet been cleared to advance to mound work as he looks to get rid of the soreness in his right lat.

Santos could get the green light to throw a bullpen session after he returns to play later this week.

Confirmed

Angels manager Ron Washington confirmed that Carlos Estévez (Toros) will be the team’s closer, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.

General manager Perry Minasian said in January, following the signing of Robert Stephenson, that he still viewed Estevez as the favorite to serve as the club’s closer, and Washington has now given him its seal of approval.

Shines in debut

Frankie Montas (Elected) struck out two in two hitless, scoreless innings in Tuesday’s spring opener against the Cubs in the Cactus League in Arizona.

Montás recorded two perfect innings in his debut, which left him excited after the start.

The right-hander underwent shoulder surgery in February 2023 and made one relief appearance with the Yankees last season.

“It’s been a long time,” Montas told MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon.

“I think two years ago, when I was pitching in spring training. Being back on the mound is exciting for me. I feel happy and blessed for that.”

He threw 27 pitches and used his entire arsenal (four-seam and two-seam fastball, splitter, cutter and slider) with a velocity of 94 to 96 mph.
