The Australian Jordan Thompson celebrated his first singles title on the ATP tour at the age of 29.
The semi-final conqueror of Olympic champion Alexander Zverev prevailed in the final in Los Cabos/Mexico against former world number two Casper Ruud from Norway 6:3, 7:6 (7:4).
“It’s been an incredible week. I’m almost 30 and I’m lifting a trophy. I never thought I’d be doing this,” said Thompson, who lost 0-6 in his quarterfinal win over USA’s Alex Michelsen. 3-0 deficit had turned around.
In the semifinals, the world number 40 defeated Zverev in a marathon match that lasted almost four hours – now the coronation.
“I’ve spent many hours on the field this week and I want to thank everyone who stayed up last night and throughout the week,” Thompson said.
He had previously reached a final on the ATP tour twice in eleven years as a professional – each time at the grass tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands (2019, 2023).
