Jonas Vingegaard winner of the second stage of Gran Camino

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) won the second stage of Gran Camino, arriving in Chantada (Spain) this Friday, after a demanding stage of 151.1 km. The Dane, winner of the last edition, wins his first race in 2024. This success allows him to take the lead in the general classification.

The day after a time trial in which he had not competed thoroughly, like part of the peloton which had preferred not to take any risks given the weather conditions and at the end of which he had taken 45th place (at 2’26 from Tarling, winner), Vingegaard therefore won his first stage this year, for his second day of racing in 2024. This success allows him to bring his career victories among professionals to 29. His last victory dates back to September 12, on the 16th stage of the Vuelta.

This success took shape in two stages, in the finale. Vingegaard first attacked 6.7 kilometers from the finish. But if he managed to distance most of the runners, two hung on: Egan Bernal and Jefferson Cepeda. These three joined Alex Molenaar (Illes Balears Arabay Cycling), then in the lead, before everyone collapsed under the influence of a second acceleration from Vingegaard, 4 kilometers from the finish. The gap was made.

The Dane thus won with 23 seconds ahead of the second, Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), who is returning to form, and 24 over the third, Jefferson Cepeda (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA). If the two managed to hang on, the other members of the top 10 of the stage were relegated to more than 40 seconds behind the Dane, like the Frenchman Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ FDJ), 5th. Another tricolor, Quentin Pacher finished in 7th place (+46 seconds).
