Jonas Schreiber: The Judo Heavyweight’s Triumphant Comeback

Judo ace Jonas Schreiber from Sport-Union Annen was completely contrite when he seriously injured his shoulder at the beginning of 2023. In the year before the Olympic Games in Paris, of all places, this set the heavyweight from Oberfischbach miles behind. The winning country fought its way back with great effort – and now managed a fantastic comeback by winning the tournament in Visé, Belgium.

Won all battles

“I didn’t actually want to fight,” Schreiber admitted. The 23-year-old wanted to do a little more in terms of fitness and prepare even better for the most important competitions for him this season. But his coaches encouraged him and ultimately convinced him to give it a try in Belgium. And lo and behold: every now and then it really isn’t a bad idea to listen to your trainers. Jonas Schreiber was in excellent form at the open Belgian championships and won his four fights early almost all of them.

At the beginning of the competition, Schreiber had a bye in the over 100 kilogram class, then it was against the Frenchman Hamza Abdallaoui, whom the SUA judoka defeated in the “Golden Score” using Waza-ari scoring. “A disgusting opponent, it really wasn’t that easy,” admitted the winner. But this was probably the ideal introduction to Visé, because afterwards the comparisons were much easier for him. In the quarter-finals against the Dutchman Jelle van de Berg and also in the semifinals against the young DJB athlete Paavo Plöhnert, the German runner-up prevailed early with a hold. Jonas Schreiber didn’t want to take any big risks when it came to tactics. “I noticed early on that I was simply fitter than my opponents. Then I thought to myself: If you just pack them up, that’s enough,” said the 23-year-old with a wink.

First I broke my calf, then I sprained my acromioclavicular joint. That’s really enough for now.

The Bundesliga judoka also dominated the final duel against the Belgian Edouard Capelle at will and did not allow himself to be put in trouble. Schreiber’s opponent found no means of asserting himself, received three punishments and was thus disqualified. A great confirmation for the national squad athlete that the form is quite good so early in the year.

The shoulder holds

“It was important for me that, among other things, I was able to defeat a young German fighter,” said Schreiber. After all, it is important to keep national competition at a distance. The train to the Olympics has left for him anyway. “There are a few others in pole position now,” Jonas Schreiber thinks of Erik Abramov (Potsdam) and Losseni Koné (Hamburg), who also benefited from the SUA judoka having to take such a long break. “After an eight-month break, this was my first tournament, it was a real horror time for me recently,” said Schreiber, who has checked off Paris but is setting his sights on Los Angeles: “The Summer Olympics after next in 2028 are definitely a goal for me . I have to use the next four and a half years to establish myself even more.”

The powerhouse still feels his damaged shoulder sometimes, but it doesn’t really bother him on the mat at all. “First I had a broken calf, then I suffered a sprained shoulder joint. That’s really enough for now. I hope that I can get through the 2024 season without any injuries.” After all, it still has enough to offer even without the Olympic Games. From April he wants to be back in the Bundesliga, and in just over a week he’s going to the European Open in Györ, Hungary.
