Former Liverpool star Cole (2010 to 2013) spoke on TNT Sports about Klopp’s successor and found some surprising words about coaching whiz Alonso: “For Xabi, it would be too early for his development as a coach if he was given the job at some point offers. I believe he is a top coach, but I think it is more difficult than people think to replace Jürgen Klopp.”

A few days ago, Liverpool’s outgoing coach praised Alonso’s work highly. Klopp said in the press conference before the Brentford game that Alonso was doing an “incredible job”.

Despite Leverkusen’s sensational season, Cole believes that Klopp’s legacy could be too great: “Whether he likes it or not, Klopp will play a role. Comments like these give the impression that he gave his permission. His successor will have a very, very difficult time.”

Cole also had a warning example at hand: “For me it’s like when Alex Ferguson left Manchester United. David Moyes came, an established top coach and it was very complicated for him.”

After just nine months in office, it was over for Moyes at Man United – a fate that could also threaten Alonso at Liverpool?

Jürgen Klopp announced in January that his time at Liverpool would end in the summer. As a former Reds player, Xabi Alonso quickly found himself among the potential successors. The Spaniard still has a contract with Leverkusen until 2026. However, he is said to have an exit agreement for top clubs such as his three former teams Bayern, Real Madrid and Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso played for Liverpool FC between 2004 and 2009, scoring 18 goals and 20 assists in 210 games. In 2005 he won the Champions League with the Reds.
