Javelin thrower Gundega Griva gets a Universiade medal 11 years after the competition

33-year-old Sudraushkina did not achieve much success in the international arena, only winning a silver medal at the 2013 Universiade in Kazan. At that time, the fourth in the javelin competition was Gundega Griva, who stated that she was not informed whether, as a result of her competitor’s disqualification, there would be a redistribution of prizes in the competition held more than ten years ago.

The usual practice in athletics stipulates that in the case of disqualification, athletes who won lower places receive the unfairly won places of the athletes who violated the rules. In this case, Grieva would deserve a bronze medal at the Universiade.

After the disclosure of the data of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory, it was established that Sudaruškina violated the anti-doping rules several times in the period from 2013 to 2014 by using prohibited substances.

AIU’s decision states that all of Sudaruškina’s results since February 28, 2013 have been annulled, including medals, titles, ranking points, cash bonuses and prizes. She was also given a four-year disqualification, which came into effect when the decision was made.

The athlete has the right to appeal the decision.
