Jannik Sinner is in the final of the Rotterdam tournament and will rise to third place in the ATP rankings

Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner beat Tallon Griekspoor in the semifinal of the ATP tournament in Rotterdam and on Sunday he will play the final against Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur. Thanks to Saturday’s victory, Sinner is already certain to rise to third place in the ATP ranking of professional tennis players from Monday 26 February. If instead he wins the tournament by beating de Minaur he will rise to third place from Monday 19 February, overtaking the Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev. The top two in the ranking are the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner is considered the best tennis talent ever born in Italy, especially after winning the Australian Open: among the men before him, that role had long been held by Adriano Panatta, who had a career of the highest level but discontinuous, still managing to win a Slam when he was 26 years old, in 1976 at Roland Garros (it is the Slam that is played between May and June in Paris, on red clay courts). Panatta managed to reach fourth place in the world rankings. Compared to Panatta, Sinner reached the top of tennis much earlier, and still has many years to improve: if he retired tomorrow, at 22 years old he would already be the most successful tennis player in Italian history, at least among men.
