Jan Siewert Released as FSV Mainz 05 Coach Amid Season Struggles

FSV Mainz 05 is parting ways with coach Jan Siewert.

The club of the two ÖFB legionnaires Karim Onisiwo and Phillipp Mwene announced this on Rose Monday.

The 41-year-old took over the professional team from Bo Svensson at the beginning of November 2023, but he was unable to reverse the trend in Mainz either. Mainz has now been without a win for eleven games and is already nine points away from the rescue bank.

There were signs of dismissal

Even against VfB Stuttgart (to the match report >>>), the 17th place team was unable to stop the negative trend. Sports director Martin Schmidt then announced a crisis meeting. “We’ll sit down together on Monday, analyze and see what the next steps are. It’s clear that we can’t continue playing like this. We need victories,” said Schmidt meaningfully.

“We have to change something,” Schmidt continued, “and you can see that. But we’ll discuss it in a close circle with the coach and among ourselves and we’ll look for solutions.” It sounds like Siewert would have to make good arguments to keep his job at Mainz 05.

His statement after the defeat against Stuttgart almost sounded like resignation: “You have to score goals and if you don’t score them, then it’s not enough at that moment – regardless of who I am. I did everything for the team is successful.”

“See a necessary step”

Sports director Christian Heidel says: “We expressly thank Jan for his commitment. He took on the task at a difficult time with a lot of passion and meticulousness and gave the team good impetus with his work. Unfortunately, this did not translate into a fundamental turnaround or results dejected.

Instead, the situation in the relegation battle has gotten significantly worse for us in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, we now see the change in the coaching position as a necessary step in order to be able to bring about a positive turnaround.”

Jan Siewert thanked “Mainz 05 for almost four years, it’s a special club for me. Many colleagues have become friends here. Together with my coaching team, I gave everything I could to ensure that the club could stay in the league, unfortunately for us “We also lacked the necessary luck. I wish the team and club all the best – and above all that they can still stay in the league.”

The new 05 coach is scheduled to be introduced on Tuesday afternoon.
