Jaén Experiences Surge in Sports Tourism with Over 3,000 Visitors Expected in February

Sports tourism. Jaén faces a “quite encouraging” first half of February with the forecast of the arrival of more than 3,000 visitors who will come to the capital with the motivation of practicing different favorite disciplines.

The first big event will be this weekend. Jaén repeats for the second consecutive year as the venue for the start of the National Junior Padel Circuit and will host the TyC 1 Tournament, a qualifying event for the first Premium event of the season. A competition in which 646 promising youngsters from the Spanish youth academy have registered, making it one of the largest recorded in national competitions so far.

Athletes who, being minors, will be accompanied by family members and their coaches. Due to the size of the championship there will also be up to 143 accredited technicians from all over Spain. The total number far exceeds 1,500 people.

José María Álvarez, Councilor for Sports, highlights “the growth of sports tourism in the capital and its greater capacity to retain travelers compared to other types of tourism.”

Other activities

On the other hand, Ifeja will host the Spanish Indoor Recurve and Compound Bow Shooting Championships from Thursday, February 8 to Sunday, February 11. The competition will be held individually and by regional teams, including the participation of mixed teams.

More than 600 athletes are expected to participate in the categories, both male and female, senior, junior, cadet and under 14 years old. To them, we must add the presence in the capital of family members and friends, technicians and federation delegates, members of the organization and judges, which can also reach the figure of 1,500 people in Jaén. Since the competition begins on the morning of the 8th, it is expected that the majority “will spend the night before in Jaén, so the economic return will be even greater.”

For his part, Vicente Oya, Councilor for Tourism, states that “sport is one of the best excuses to show Jaén and generate wealth in the city. “We are increasingly recognized for being the capital of major sporting events.”
