Ivory Coast after a false start in the African Cup final

Hosts Ivory Coast and Nigeria will contest the African Cup final on Sunday. The Ivorians beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in Abidjan on Wednesday evening thanks to Sebastien Haller’s goal (65th). Nigeria had previously defeated the surprise team South Africa 4-2 on penalties after a tough fight.

After regular time the score was 1-1 in Bouake after two penalty goals from William Troost-Ekong (67′) for Nigeria and Teboho Mokoena (90′) for South Africa. In the subsequent extra time, both teams remained scoreless. The Nigerians are in the African Cup final for the first time since 2013.

Two years later, Ivory Coast won their last continental championship title to date. At the home tournament, the hosts almost failed early with just one win in the preliminary round, but were able to improve in the knockout phase.
