Inside the Ultimate Farewell: Roger Federer’s Laver Cup 2022 Documentary

Roger Federer’s last appearance as an active tennis player at the Laver Cup 2022 apparently provided so much material that Amazon is having a documentary produced from it. With an absolute star director.

Anyone interested in sports documentaries cannot ignore Asif Kapadia. The 52-year-old Brit has made fantastic films about Ayrton Senna and Diego Maradona, and Kapadia has also dealt with Amy Winehouse in film (and even won an Oscar for it). So if Roger Federer trusts this director, then you know that there will soon be an exceptionally good documentary on Amazon.

Which wasn’t actually planned, as Federer explained in a statement. He actually wanted to have camera teams follow his last days as an active tennis player so that he could later show the pictures to his family. The material now apparently provides enough stories for a full-length film. The last twelve days until the grand final of the Laver Cup 2022 in London’s O2 Arena will be illuminated.

“Throughout my career, I’ve always been afraid of having too many cameras around me and my family, especially in important moments,” explains Federr. “But I couldn’t see any harm in filming those days because it was never intended for the public.”

Where Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray played together in one team for the first and only time. The maestro’s great companions will also have their say in interviews.
