They will be on the Paseo de la Costa in the city of Neuquén, next Monday, February 19.

Within the framework of the Day against Discrimination due to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression in Sports, which will be commemorated next Monday the 19th, a day of reflection will be held in the city of Neuquén with sports activities and talks. It will be organized by the Ministry of Human Development, Local Governments and Women and social organizations that work on the issue.

The meeting is open to the community and will take place on the Paseo de la Costa beach starting at 6 p.m., with the aim of raising ideas and developing proposals to achieve a truly inclusive sport in the province of Neuquén. There will be talks, open and free boxing, badminton, table tennis, stretch and fitness classes.

The activity is promoted by the Undersecretary of Diversity in conjunction with the Undersecretaries of Youth and Sports, and social organizations that work on the issue, such as Autoconvened Soccer Players and Espacio Queer.

“Without a gender and diversity perspective, spaces tend to exclude and expel,” said Natalia Fenizi, Secretary of Gender. “To build other possible universes, the reference and teaching spaces in sports fields must be diverse. That is, that women, men and diversities have equal representation in decision-making places,” she assured.

For her part, Luz Blanco, Undersecretary of Diversity, explained that “this initiative is part of the ministerial work agenda aimed at making visible and strengthening the inclusion of diversities in all social and recreational areas.” And she added that “our goal is to continue building respectful sports spaces free of discrimination, in which all people can participate safely.”

About the date

The Day against Discrimination based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression in Sports is commemorated in tribute to the birth of Justin Fashanu, the first elite footballer to publicly announce his membership in the LGBT+ community in 1990.

After his statement, he was not only expelled from his team, but also mocked by his teammates, and was never hired again permanently by any other team. Finally, after a false accusation of rape, plunged into depression, he committed suicide in 1998.
