World Athletics has introduced a new term “short track” to replace the current term “indoor” for the purpose of recording results in disciplines that take place on a 200-meter track, traditionally held indoors.
The World Athletics Council has endorsed the new concept to allow greater flexibility in the installation of 200m tracks, which could be built outdoors or as temporary sites in the future rather than a traditional indoor arena. Therefore, results on outdoor or temporary 200m tracks may be recognized as official for record and ranking purposes.
If the discipline takes place on the 200-meter track, including the all-around, it is replaced by the abbreviation “sh”. In the future, the results will be shown in athletics statistics – lists of the best results of the season, records and profiles of athletes and elsewhere.
World, continental and national indoor records become “short track” records and will no longer be recorded as “indoor”.
LVS reminds us that although it no longer matters whether a stadium or short track is indoors or outdoors, the concepts of “indoor” and “stadium” are still not really going away. In particular, this is necessary in connection with the measurement of wind speed in running or jumping disciplines, so it is necessary that the word “indoors” or “i” is always reflected in the name of indoor competitions.
