«He’s sick», «loser», «str…»- Corriere.it

The most irreverent or most intimate portraits of Joe Biden all agree in attributing to him an unexpected trait: mild in public, the octogenarian president is known for his comments in private, often sarcastic, scathing, harsh. On Trump, according to a background story published on Friday by Politico, he gives the best (or worst) of himself. “He’s fucking sick,” he would say to his closest friends and collaborators. And also ‘a fucking asshole…’, ‘a sick fuck’. Languages worthy of Succession’s family quarrels. His opponent irritates him to the point that at a recent rally — in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, addressing the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection — the salacious tones he typically uses toward him in private almost leaked into public. “At one of his rallies he joked about the guy, one of those who bought his big lie, who hammered Paul Pelosi on the skull”, that is, the husband of the Speaker of the House.  «And he laughed at this fact… he found it funny. How sick…». Then he stopped, while the crowd applauded.

Biden is often seen as calm and as a personality capable of breaking down the level of acrimony in the political debate; this portrait – which Politico draws starting from the testimonies of three anonymous sources very close to him – also shows his deep anger towards Trump, who risks defeating him in the next elections and who Biden however considers a threat to national democracy.

The anecdote about Paul Pelosi really happened. In October 2022, a right-wing extremist fanatical about conspiracy theories broke into the Pelosi family’s home and attacked the Speaker’s 83-year-old husband with a hammer, smashing his skull. Trump actually joked about it at his rallies. “We will oppose the crazy Nancy Pelosi, who ruined San Francisco: how is her husband, does anyone know?”, he laughed for example in September, at the party’s California convention. Â «Pelosi is against the construction of a wall on our border, yet she has one around her house. Of course, it wasn’t enough.” And then laughter.

Biden’s contempt is triggered not only by Trump’s cynicism, according to people close to him who spoke to Politico, but also by his role as “maneuver”, from the White House dining room, in the riots of January 6 ; from his comment that “good people” had also participated in the assault on the Capitol; respect for Vladimir Putin. And then there’s a painful personal button. Trump would have defined the soldiers who died on the front as “suckers” and “losers”: in short, “losers”. And he allegedly refused to visit a military cemetery because it was raining. Last week in South Carolina Biden recalled these episodes with anger: «How dare you talk like that about my son and his fellow soldiers? The only loser I see is Donald Trump.” His son Beau died of brain cancer: probably due to exposure to toxic fumes in Iraq, where he was serving as a soldier.
