here are the previous double roles in football

Francesco Calzona’s return to the Napoli bench would be a sensational return: he was, in fact, first Maurizio Sarri’s deputy in the era of great beauty, and then joined Luciano Spalletti’s staff. He left last season and accepted the proposal of Marek Hamsik (who could follow him in blue) to lead the Slovak national team, with which he qualified for the European Championship. Calzona would keep the double role: the idea is to stay at Napoli until the end of the championship and then play for the European Championship with Slovakia.

INSIGHTS

But who are the coaches who in the past have simultaneously held the role of coach of a club team and that of coach of a national team?

The rules

The possibility of covering these two roles simultaneously depends exclusively on the regulations of each individual federation. For example, the FIGC explicitly prohibits it in article 40 paragraph 4 of the Technical Sector Regulations: «The Coaches in Charge of the National Teams of the FIGC and their Deputy during the same sporting season cannot become members nor, regardless of membership, play activities for companies, not even with different tasks, unless the economic contract has been resolved by mutual agreement”.

However, different rules govern the Slovak Football Federation which has already given its approval for Calzona’s double role. The same can be said for the 7 previous coaches in the history of football who were able to play these two roles in the same period: Rinus Michels (Barcelona – Holland in 1974), Alex Ferguson (Aberdeen – Scotland in 1985/1986), Guus Hiddink ( Chelsea – Russia in 2009), Dick Advocat (AZ Alkmaar-Belgium in 2009-2010), Fatih Terim (Galatasaray-Turkey in 2013), Miguel Herrera (Club América-Mexico in 2013) and Leonid Slutsky (CSKA Moscow-Russia in 2015 /2016).

The most famous case

The best-known case is probably that of Guus Hiddink, who was hired as Chelsea manager in 2009 while he had been Russia coach since 2006. In the period of dual employment he managed to win the FA Cup with the blues, while with the Russians he failed to win the qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

Last year there was a lot of talk about the possibility of Josè Mourinho taking on the role of Roma coach and Portugal coach at the same time, but the indiscretion never materialised.
