It is this theory that the Crown presented to the jury Thursday at the opening of the trial of Akong Yves Fonbah, a 30-year-old man accused of the first degree murder of George Riches. The evidence in this case is circumstantial since no one saw the accused attack the victim.

According to the public prosecutor, Akong Yves Fonbah, alias Ocho, was the crack “dealer” of Kenny Riches, the victim’s son. On September 11, 2021, a conflict broke out between the two men when Fonbah refused to sell him crack. Furious, Kenny stole the accused’s TV and sold it for $40 to buy drugs, according to the Crown’s account.

This decision sets fire to the powder. Still according to the Crown, the accused and the victim’s son exchanged “stormy” calls all day long. They invite each other to fight and threaten each other. During a call, Akong Yves Fonbah said he was going to kill Kenny and his father, the Crown says. The last call came a few minutes before the murder.

PHOTO FILED AS PROOF

It was on this couch that George Riches was killed.

Around 1:30 a.m., in the borough of LaSalle, Kenny Riches smokes crack in his room. His father George is presumably sleeping on the couch in the living room. According to the Crown, Akong Yves Fonbah entered through the “patio door” and killed the victim with a baseball bat.

Kenny hears a noise, sees his father seriously injured and sees the accused in the apartment with a baseball bat in his hands. In shock, Kenny takes a knife and chases the accused from the apartment. But the accused returns to smash the windows of the “patio door” of the apartment with his stick. At least that’s what Kenny will tell at trial, according to the Crown.

The accused had a baseball bat and said he was going to fight with Kenny, shortly before the events, according to the Crown. Moreover, the victim’s DNA was on the baseball bat recovered by a witness in the case. Shattered glass at the crime scene will also have a role to play during the trial.

“The evidence will show you that on the night of September 11 to 12, as part of the conflict, the accused threatened to kill Kenny and kill his father and ultimately showed up at the scene of the crime to carry out his threats. carried out, even if no one saw it done,” concluded Me Simon Lapierre, who is teaming up with Me Philippe Vallières-Roland.

The trial is taking place before Judge Éliane B. Perreault. Me Steven Amormino, Me Carine Njonang and Me Sharon Sandiford defend the accused.
