Grant Williams’ Short-Lived Stint with the Dallas Mavericks

Grant Williams only played for the Dallas Mavericks for around six months. After reports about his alleged negative influence in the dressing room, GM Nico Harrison put a stop to it.

“Grant doesn’t deserve all the negativity that’s on social media right now,” Mavs GM Nico Harrison annoyed in an interview with Marc Stein (Substack). “He was a good teammate,” the general manager made clear.

The Mavs parted ways with Williams on deadline day. The forward, who only came from Boston via a sign-and-trade deal in the summer, was traded to the Charlotte Hornets along with Seth Curry and a protected first-round pick, and in return PJ Washington moved to Dallas.

Tim MacMahon (ESPN) had revealed in a podcast afterwardsthat Williams had “offended” a lot of people in Dallas and continued: “They paid for a pick swap through him and gave him away as quickly as possible. They really wanted to get rid of him. It wasn’t just about Washington got it, they had enough of Williams too.”

Dallas Mavericks: Grant Williams only stayed for six months

In a sign-and-trade deal with Boston and San Antonio, the Mavs gave up a 2030 pick swap and two second-round picks and signed the forward for four years and $54 million. However, after a good start, the 25-year-old dropped significantly. In 47 games, 33 of which he started, Williams only put up 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and hit 37.6 percent of his three-pointers.

At the time of the moves, the Mavs were 28-23 and ranked eighth in the West, reason enough for Harrison to make changes. “If you don’t play the way you expected before the season, then you have to make changes like that,” the GM continued.

In addition to Washington, the Mavs also grabbed center Daniel Gafford from Washington, and the two newcomers immediately impressed in the blowout win against the Oklahoma City Thunder. With a record of 30-23, the Mavs are still only eighth, but the gap to fifth place (Phoenix) is only one game. Before the All-Star break, the Mavs still have two home games waiting for them; they host the two basement children Washington and San Antonio.
