Göztepe Men’s Basketball Team Launches in Turkish Basketball 2nd League

The launch of Göztepe Men’s Basketball Team, which will compete in the Turkish Basketball 2nd League from next season, was held at the press conference held at Gürsel Aksel Stadium.

Göztepe Olympic Branches President Mehmet Sepil, who attended the meeting, stated that Göztepe is a sports club and said, “It has been 10 years since we took over Göztepe. 10 years ago I said ‘Göztepe is a sports club’. Göztepe is not just football. We have come a long way since that year. Basketball is a very important branch. We are approaching the goals we set 10 years ago, step by step. We aimed to restructure Göztepe in all Olympic branches. Indoor sports are also very important. We have also made a very important restructuring in women’s volleyball. Handball is one of our most important branches. We have 17 branches, all of them are active. Among them, we have national and Olympic athletes. Ferhat Arıcan, wearing the Göztepe jersey for the first time in gymnastics, won a medal. We started basketball 2 years ago with infrastructure. Despite the support challenge for the facility, we remained patient. We’re starting now. “The goal is to continue on our way by being patient, paying attention to infrastructure, building the future and being financially strong,” he said.

Stating that they are continuing their facility construction works, Mehmet Sepil said, “When I came, we did not even have a tree. There was only the construction of Urla Adnan Süvari Facilities. Let’s take a look at Gürsel Aksel Stadium. It was built very carefully, we designed the project ourselves. This is still a stadium, this will be an attraction area. It is very important for the entire stadium to be put into operation. There will be children’s areas, sports areas, walking areas on the roof. It will come very soon. All ministerial decisions have been taken, this will be implemented. Our first goal is to make Gürsel Aksel Stadium an area of attraction. This is a sports center that lives 24 hours a day. The stadium is our first priority. The second is the İnciraltı project. We laid the foundation last year. We could not start the project, but it is not easy. We still need to get the approval of many ministries. İnciraltı is my biggest dream. There will be an Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, archers will practice, gymnasts We are also very close to the Inciraltı project. I believe we can start it within 2 or 3 months. There will also be a lounge there. Our hall will not be very big, but matches can be played. Third, we need a hall. Its capacity must be at least greater than 3,500. We receive many promises. The fourth is football infrastructure facilities. “We will see whether this will happen in Torbalı or Seferihisar,” he said.

Stating that they worked very patiently for basketball, Basketball Branch President Atakan Atalar said, “We prepared for the task of structuring the infrastructure 3 years ago. Our president, Mehmet Sepil, gave us the key to the branch and we had freedom of movement. First of all, patience was required and we showed this patience. We are reviving the A team after 20 years. We know our responsibility. We first focused on the first 3 years and determined our goals. Our goals in the A team are big, but we determined a plan with patience. This is Göztepe Sports Club. We want to bring Göztepe to the top leagues in basketball. This is the biggest club in Izmir. Our goals will always be the top positions. “We aim for the highest levels in other Olympic branches as well,” he said.

On the other hand, Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) Vice President Hüseyin Beşok and many Göztepe Basketball Branch managers attended the launch.
