Goalkeeper Battle: Raab Shines in HSV Premiere

It was the hottest topic at HSV. Who is in the goal?

At his premiere against Elversberg (1-0), new coach Steffen Baumgart (52) relied on Matheo Raab (25). Daniel Heuer Fernandes (31) had to go to the bench again.

“Matheo had played the last two games. During training, both trained on equal terms. Then you stay with Matheo because, in my opinion, he did a good job,” Baumgart explains his decision.

And further: “Today I saw a good goalkeeper.” Raab didn’t have much to do for long stretches of the game. Shortly before the end, however, he was there and saved the victory with a reflex (88th minute).

Raab on changing of the guard: “I would be a little cautious”

Saturday after training, Raab found out that he was still playing. “Of course I was really happy. Even today with the win and then still to zero. “It couldn’t have gone much better,” beamed Raab after the final whistle.

Raab enjoyed the first Baumgart days: “It was as you imagine it to be. Enormously motivating, putting myself in front of the team, just giving you a good feeling.”

What’s next in the second division team’s box? Is this the changing of the guard at HSV?

“I would be a little careful. The services have to be right. I will give everything for that,” says Raab, who is hoping for a regular place. “Nobody can give you that guarantee in football. The services have to be right. I’m doing my best and want to stay in it.”

Baumgart sees it similarly: “Both goalkeepers can show me – if maybe not in the second week, then in the third week – who is better. Then I’ll be clear and decide. I would also decide back.” That means: make Fernandes No. 1 again this year.
