Germany Mourns the Loss of World Cup Hero Andreas Brehme: Lothar Matthäus Pays Tribute to a Close Friend

Germany mourns the loss of a World Cup hero – and Lothar Matthäus (62) mourns the loss of a good friend.

The sudden death of Andreas Brehme (†63) affects his long-time teammate. This became clear once again on Saturday (February 24, 2024) before the top Bundesliga game between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig (2:1).

Lothar Matthäus comments in a hoarse voice

At the beginning of the broadcast, Sky looked back on Brehme’s career. Moderator Sebastian Hellmann (56) asked Matthäus, who not only played with Brehme for years in the national team but also at Inter Milan, about his former colleague.

Matthäus emphasized how close he and Brehme were. Brehme was not just a teammate for him, but a friend and family member.

When Matthäus seemed close to tears, Hellmann broke off the topic and sent the TV viewers to the commercial break early. “You can hear the pain in his voice,” wrote one X observer.

As the broadcast continued, many other fans noticed the hoarse voice of the record-breaking German national player – which, however, was not related to the mourning for Brehme. Last week, Matthäus had already struggled with hoarseness during Leipzig’s game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which was clearly audible to everyone.

“Can someone please bring Lothar Matthäus a pot of tea and lollipops?” asked a user on X. In fact, the Sky expert treated himself to a peppermint tea in the press box. “Please save Lothar Matthäus, why is he being forced to comment on this?” asked a user in the second half.

Before kick-off, there was a minute’s silence in the Allianz Arena for Brehme, who scored the winning goal from a penalty in the 1990 World Cup final against Argentina in Rome. Matthäus had put on new shoes at halftime, which is why he let Brehme take the penalty.

“We were roommates, at the national team and at Inter Milan. We often spent 100 nights a year together,” Matthäus told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” on the day of Brehme’s death on Tuesday (February 20): “This friendship wasn’t over even after his career. It’s really like a family member has died.”
