The deadline has passed, but that does not mean that Dutch clubs can no longer attract players. There are several transfer-free players on the market who can sign anywhere. An overview.

Jean-Paul Boëtius (29 years)

He trained with Sparta Rotterdam before the winter break, but contract negotiations went wrong there. Played his last match on May 27 for Hertha BSC. In the Netherlands, the single Dutch international is best known for his two periods (2012-2015 and 2017/2018) at Feyenoord, where he was unable to continue a promising start. Was still a winger during his years at De Kuip, but mainly played as a midfielder in Germany.

It’s been almost a year since he played his last game. In March 2023, the central defender suffered a serious knee injury at SC Heerenveen, which did not extend his contract last summer. The question is how fit the former youth international is now.

Anwar El Ghazi (28 January)

The two-time Dutch national team played for PSV at the start of the season, but left for FSV Mainz 05 due to a lack of playing minutes. There, the attacker’s contract was terminated after social media messages about the war in Gaza. The question now is whether he can still play this season, because according to FIFA rules you can only play for two clubs in one season.

Jurgen Locadia (30 years)

The attacker was in the interest of Vitesse this transfer period. It did not come to a contract with the Arnhem team, but the former player of, among others, Brighton & Hove Albion and Hoffenheim seems to be in good standing with more Eredivisie clubs. He played his last minutes for the Chinese Mighty Lions on August 26, after having also been active in Iran and the United States in recent years.

Like Jordan Henderson, he had his contract with Al Ettifaq terminated, but the eight-time Germany international already did so last summer. The winger has been without a club since then. He may be open to a third adventure in the Eredivisie, after reaching the Europa League final with Ajax (2017) and causing a stir at FC Utrecht, especially off the field. He clashed there two years ago with trainer Henk Fraser, who was subsequently fired.

Ryan Babel (37 years old)

He is the only player from the silver Dutch selection of the 2010 World Cup who has not yet retired, although he has not played in recent months. In September, his contract with Turkish side Eyüpspor was terminated. The former attacker of Ajax and Liverpool, among others, is now elderly and so the question is whether he wants to embark on another adventure.

Abdenasser El Khayati (34 neighbours)

The phlegmatic midfielder had his contract terminated with the Indian Mumbai City last Wednesday. The goal now is to find a challenge closer to home. He has proven to be an added value in the Eredivisie at Willem II and ADO Den Haag. Now the question is which club will dare to take him on.
