French judoka Luka Mkheidze wins silver at Grand Slam Baku 2024

GRAND SLAM BAKU 2024 – The harvest continues for Luka Mkheidze! The Frenchman won the silver medal in Azerbaijan.

Port of Mkheidze (-60 kg) defeated Ahmad Yusifov in the 2nd round with a waza-ari. He won on waza-ari-awasate-ippon in the quarterfinals against Kamoliddin Bakhtiyorov then in the semi-final against Temur Nozadze.

In the final, he faced Ramazan Abdulaev, 5th in the last European Championships, where he lost in the final against the Frenchman. In 5 fights, the Russian had only won once, during the Grand Prix which he won in Tajikistan last year.

The Frenchman continues the attacks. Fast for a ko-uchi-gari, he failed to score a waza-ari. Ultimately, both ended up with 2 penalties, while the Russian didn’t do much. Mkheidze started the golden score like the fight: very offensive and dangerous for his opponent. Unfortunately, he will be penalized for pressing his head and therefore win the silver.

Given the appearance of the fight, we were rather going for a 3rd consecutive gold medal in a major championship for Mkheidze but he will have to be content with silver.

In the same category, Cedric Revol lost to Vijay Kumar Yadav in the golden score.

Sarah-Léonie Cysique 7th

Sarah-Léonie Cysique (-57 kg) beat Zhanar Zholdosheva and Nilufar Ermaganbetova on ippon. In the quarters against Julie Beurskens, she conceded a waza-ari 1 minute 30 from the end while the Dutchwoman had 2 penalties. She failed to reverse the trend and bowed.

In repechage, she faced Marica Perisic. She had beaten the Serbian in Paris to win bronze but this time, she took her revenge.
