France falls to Denmark in Euro 2024 semi-finals: A hard-fought battle for Les Bleues

They lost on Wednesday at the opening of the group stage against the Danes, six-time European champions during the first eight editions and four-time title holders (1-4). The French lost again to the Scandinavians this Saturday in Lodz (Poland) for their reunion in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 by teams (1-3).

But even more than three days earlier, the three Alsatians Margot Lambert (Red Star Mulhouse), Sharone Bauer (ASPTT Strasbourg), Rosy Pancasari (ASPTTS) and their partners were able to believe in the feat.

Lambert and Tran sound the revolt

It must be said that Margot Lambert and Parisian Anne Tran, 20th in the world in doubles, kept hope alive in a spectacular way by taking their revenge, in the second match, on the pair Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen, 19th (16-21, 21-15, 21-17) and thus equalizing at 1 all.

Wednesday in front of the same opponents, the triple champions of France had obtained two match shuttlecocks in the second set and three more in the third (at 20-17), without concluding. They ended up giving in 21-18, 24-26, 20-22. But this Saturday, they erased this cruel defeat in the most beautiful way.

Trailing 1 set to nothing and 9-15 in the second, they inflicted a thunderous 12-0 on Fruergaard/Thygesen and continued their momentum in the decisive set (12-6) which they won brilliantly (16-21 , 21-15, 21-17).

Bauer and Delrue so close, so far

Even if Denmark then regained the advantage (2-1), the duo Sharone Bauer (ASPTTS)/Delphine Delrue believed they could reset the counters to zero – or rather two everywhere – in the second doubles against Alexandra Boje and Amalie Magelund whom he defeated on Wednesday in group play (15-21, 21-19, 21-17).

But this time the scenario was reversed. Victorious in the first set after saving two sets, the Strasbourg native and the Camblysian led 14-11 in the second before losing the lead. And the Boje-Magelund tandem then did not let go of their prey to win 21-23, 21-17, 21-8, giving their country its place in the final and allowing it to dream of a seventh continental crown this Sunday (10 a.m.) against Spain.

The other Strasbourg resident Rosy Pancasari, 83rd in singles, therefore did not have to challenge Line Christophersen, 34th, for the fifth match. For Les Bleues, this Euro 2024 ends there, with a second consecutive bronze medal.
