On Tuesday morning, the Spanish newspaper Marca announced a “Barca hit” – in the afternoon the amazing news was officially confirmed: It’s about the signing of ex-NBA star Ricky Rubio.

The brilliant point guard unexpectedly signed a contract with FC Barcelona until the end of the season and was even registered for the Euroleague.

However, it is still unclear when or whether the 33-year-old will play for Barca. According to Barca, Rubio can decide for himself when he feels ready. The reason for this: The former super talent announced before the World Cup in August 2023 that he wanted to take a break from his career due to psychological problems.

According to Marca, the player is not contractually obliged to play and the contract can therefore be terminated by either party. Between 2009 and 2011, Rubio played for the top European club and won, among other things, the championship and the EuroLeague, before he took the step into the NBA, where he played for four teams.

At the beginning of January, the Spaniard, who was under contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA at the time, even announced that he wanted to end his career for good – at least in the USA. He shared via Instagram: “When the time is right, I would like to share my entire experience to help other people in similar situations. Until then, I would like to keep it private out of respect for myself and my family as I continue to work on my mental health.”

“The genius has his smile back”

Now the 33-year-old reported that he was feeling better. Rubio recently trained with FC Barcelona a few times and of course felt the months-long break and the lack of rhythm.

Barca coach Roger Grimau, whom Rubio already knows from their time together as players at Barca, emphasized: “It seems as if he hadn’t been out that long.”

Marca recently spoke of the “return of the prodigal son” and now wrote: “If the return comes about, it would be a fantastic signing for Barca. The genius has regained his smile and his enthusiasm for the game. Today is a party in Spanish basketball.”
