Ivory Coast has won the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time. In the final in the city of Abidjan, the team won 2-1 (0-1) against Nigeria. Sébastien Haller from Borussia Dortmund scored the decisive goal for Ivory Coast in the 81st minute – shortly after his first attempt at an overhead kick failed to make it 2-1 in the 75th minute. William Troost-Ekong (38th) initially gave Nigeria the lead, but Franck Kessié equalized for Ivory Coast in the 62nd minute. Ivory Coast had already won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1992 and 2015.

In the game for third place, South Africa won 6-5 on penalties against the Democratic Republic of Congo after failing to score a goal in 120 minutes.

Nigeria initially presented a stable defensive performance in the final. The West Africans brought two attempts to the opponent’s goal in the first half, once with success: Troost-Ekong’s header could not stop goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. The equalizer also came with a header. Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
