Hamburger SV has probably found a successor for Tim Walter. The second division team is said to have reached an agreement with Steffen Baumgart, the former coach of 1. FC Köln. The contract term has also apparently been determined.

Hamburger SV probably has a new coach. According to information from SPORT BILD and BILD, Steffen Baumgart, 52, is the new hope for the second division club so that Hamburg can finally get promoted to the Bundesliga at the sixth attempt. The former coach of 1. FC Cologne apparently receives a contract until the summer of 2025.

According to the report, Baumgart will bring René Wagner, with whom he worked in Cologne, as an assistant. They already formed a coaching duo at SC Paderborn. Baumgart will probably lead the first training session on Tuesday afternoon. Before that, he will be officially presented at a press conference.

Baumgart’s mission at HSV is clearly defined. The 52-year-old is supposed to stabilize the unsettled team and get them back on the road to success. In the second half of the season, HSV only got seven out of 15 possible points. The Hamburgers are currently only third in the table. Baumgart would celebrate his debut next Sunday (1.30 p.m.) in the home game against newly promoted SV Elversberg. HSV lost the first leg 1:2. Interim coach Polzin will move back into the second line and support Baumgart.

Baumgart should create advancement

The former professional (Hansa Rostock, VfL Wolfsburg and Union Berlin) has experience in the fight for promotion. In 2019, he completely unexpectedly led SC Paderborn into the Bundesliga. Two years later he went to Cologne and managed to qualify for the Conference League with FC. In December 2023, Cologne parted ways with Baumgart after only ten points from 16 games.

The Rostock native then announced that he would take over a club again as quickly as possible. The fact that it will be HSV is something very special for him: he has been a big supporter of the two-time European Cup winner since he was a child. Now he still has to fulfill the dream of all HSV fans: returning to the Bundesliga.
