Financial Challenges and Negotiations: The Future of KVO’s Ailing Ship

KVO’s ship is still afloat. The 1-1 in the cup against Antwerp was good and the judicial administrator is also trying to find financial solutions. For example, thanks to some transfer income, player wages can be paid. Serious potential buyers are also being sought and it is crucial that a solution is found for Marc Coucke’s very expensive grandstand.

The coastal team pays a hefty sum for this every year – until recently 800,000 euros per year – which is not sustainable. In addition, the Special Tax Inspectorate (BBI) is asking questions about the usufruct construction, which means that a claim of 5.5 million euros is hanging over that stand.

However, the administrator had constructive discussions with the grandstand manager and the BBI. Marc Coucke already compromised and would be willing to sell the grandstand for a reasonable price. If KVO goes bankrupt or is relegated to the amateur series, the stands will automatically fall into the hands of the city of Ostend.

What is a reasonable price for a building that cost many millions? This can be negotiated and any prospective acquirer must also be willing to do so. It is not obvious. Also because the BBI issue has not yet been resolved. Here too, the grandstand owner, the club (and possibly the prospective buyer) must negotiate to possibly reduce or share the claim. Hopes are growing for a deal, but there are still pitfalls.
