Thomas Tuchel will go – “Who else do Bayern want to get now?”

FC Bayern Munich and coach Thomas Tuchel are ending their collaboration after this season. The record champions may need more of a father figure than a coach, says WELT TV football expert Christian Beilfuss.

FC Bayern is deep in crisis. The collaboration with Thomas Tuchel will end in the summer, as the club announced on Wednesday. Successors are already being traded, including a multiple Champions League winner and a former Bayern terror.

It was a job guarantee that FC Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen had given Thomas Tuchel. “Of course,” Dreesen said last weekend, Tuchel will sit on the Munich bench for the coming games. That’s true, but it’s been clear since Wednesday: The guarantee has an expiration date: the coach and the club will part ways in the summer.

FC Bayern is reacting to the ongoing sporting crisis. The German record champions recently lost three times in a row and are facing their first titleless season since 2012. “We came to the decision in an open, good conversation to mutually end our collaboration in the summer,” said Dreesen just three days after guaranteed job guarantee.

“Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to give everything for maximum success,” said Tuchel himself. The early dismissal of the coach means the Munich team now has enough time to look for a new coach. Some candidates for a possible successor to Tuchel have already been named in the Bayern environment.

Zidane as coach at FC Bayern?

The “Corriere dello Sport” brings an illustrious name into play: Zinédine Zidane. “Zizou is the first name in Bayern’s mind,” says a report in the Italian sports newspaper. The German record champions even contacted the former world star before the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League against Lazio Rome (0-1). “Zidane would be the first choice to succeed Tuchel in the summer,” writes the Gazette. According to Sky, there were at least internal discussions about Zidane at FC Bayern.

Zidane, who has been without a coaching job since leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, recently emphasized in an interview with “beIN Sports”: “It is always my goal to become a coach again. I’m currently taking more time for other things. But the goal is to come back.” However, the French football hero is not the only potential successor to Tuchel.

The name Xabi Alonso comes up again and again. The Spaniard, who is well on his way to ending Bayern’s long-standing championship streak with Bayer Leverkusen, is considered one of the most sought-after coaches in the industry. Most recently, the renowned football journalist Raphael Honigstein reported on Bayern’s interest in Alonso, who once played in Munich for three years.

Former Bayern shock as Tuchel replacement?

An old friend is also considered a candidate for Bayern. Hans-Dieter Flick, who once won the sextuple of the championship, the national cup, the Champions League, the national Supercup, the Uefa Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Munich team, should play a role in the minds of those responsible. However, the separation between the club and the former national coach in 2021 was not very harmonious.

As “Bild” reports, a surprise name came up in the search for a new coach: Sebastian Hoeneß. The nephew of honorary president Uli Hoeneß saved VfB Stuttgart from relegation last season and led the Swabians to a Champions League place. The 41-year-old knows FC Bayern from his time as a youth coach and coach of the second team, with whom he won the third division championship in 2020.

According to a report from Sky, Ole Gunnar Solskjær could also take over as coach at Bayern. The 50-year-old Norwegian is on the market and most recently coached Manchester United. However, there have not yet been any concrete discussions between Bayern and the former striker of the English record champions, who shocked Bayern with his goal in the 1999 Champions League final. Sports director Christoph Freund has been following Solskjær’s career path closely for years.
