FC Bayern, Tuchel out: “Let Sebastian Hoeneß do it”

According to Lothar Matthäus, the separation from coach Thomas Tuchel should encourage FC Bayern to bring deserving former players back into the club’s top ranks in the future. The former Munich captain sees the absence of these same people as one reason why Bayern are disappointing in the season and are likely to end their championship streak in the Bundesliga after eleven triumphs. Matthäus said on Sky that he would be happy “if faces who have written Bayern Munich history on the pitch are integrated into Bayern Munich again.”

For decades, ex-professionals like Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Franz Beckenbauer shaped the fortunes on Säbener Straße. They were then followed by players like Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic – but they too had to leave in the meantime. Matthäus suggested players like Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and, in the future, Thomas Müller as decision-makers.

“These players should be integrated into the club, there are definitely positions for that,” said the 62-year-old: “These are people who have experienced FC Bayern’s DNA on the pitch and not just as fans in the corner or in front sat in front of the television.”

Leverkusen as a prime example for FC Bayern

The former world footballer referred to Bayer Leverkusen, where former captain Simon Rolfes has been the sports director since this season and the team has the best chance of winning the championship. The Munich team has always been successful. “It is important that former players who helped write the great history at FC Bayern are involved,” said Matthäus. “And that’s where I miss it. Uli Hoeneß is at Tegernsee, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is retiring and, unfortunately, Franz Beckenbauer is no longer there.”

FC Bayern announced on Wednesday that, in view of the disappointing performances this season, it would terminate coach Tuchel’s contract in the summer of 2024, a year earlier than planned. In an “amicable conversation” with Tuchel, as Bavaria’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen emphasized.

Matthew says it was “probably the most sensible conversation that has ever taken place between the two sides. An earlier or premature separation is not ruled out by the current decision. One hopes for a positive effect. If that doesn’t happen, you can always separate immediately. The team is now responsible.”

“It’s a very, very hard job for Tuchel now”

FC Bayern and coach Thomas Tuchel will go their separate ways at the end of the season. WELT TV football reporter Paul Klinzing is surprised by the timing of the announcement: “This is a very difficult situation for both sides.”

Former Bayern professional Dietmar Hamann can imagine current Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß as the future coach of the record champions from Munich from this summer. “I would almost tend to say: Let Sebastian Hoeneß do it,” explained TV expert Hamann in his column for the Sky channel, justifying this as follows: “The human component has been lost in the last few months or maybe even years. The club has to humanize again, as they say in Bavaria, at all levels. Hoeneß could contribute to this.”

The nephew of the club’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß and son of the former Bayern goalscorer Dieter Hoeneß is currently working very successfully in Stuttgart. The 41-year-old led VfB to third place this season after relegation last year. This would mean qualification for the Champions League at the end of the season.

Hamann was not surprised by Tuchel’s departure, although he also blamed the club’s management for it. Looking at CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sports director Christoph Freund, Hamann said: “There is a lack of sporting competence in the executive suite and the new sports director first had to find his feet. The lack of leadership in recent months has contributed to the current situation. Bayern have to think about that too.”

The discussion about Kimmich

Former Bayern professional Thomas Helmer sees the reasons for the series of defeats not only with Tuchel despite the separation at the end of the season. It was “too easy for him to blame the coach for the crisis,” the 58-year-old wrote in his “Kicker” column. The players are also challenged. “It takes leaders; I don’t believe in a flat hierarchy.”

National player Joshua Kimmich “likes to be a six, but for me it’s not a real one,” said Helmer. In the current situation, the ex-professional “doesn’t have the impression that every player is doing everything they can to achieve maximum success.” Bayern had recently lost three competitive games in a row, after which Bayern and Tuchel agreed to part ways at the end of the season.

Helmer doesn’t see a functioning axis at Bayern at the moment. “In general, I miss the absolute greed and gall that Franck Ribéry or Arjen Robben exuded.” The team “urgently needs a change.” However, it won’t just be possible with our own talents – like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, David Alaba and today Thomas Müller – said Helmer.

“Anyone who wears the FC Bayern jersey has to have the right mentality in addition to sporting quality. If it doesn’t work, the wind blows extremely in your face. In the opposite case, I also experienced during my time as a player that success is highly rewarded,” said Helmer.

Green light for Eberl personnel
