Shortly after the final whistle on the last matchday of the previous season, when Bayern dramatically wrested the championship from Dortmund thanks to Jamal Musiala’s goal, it became known that the Munich team would no longer continue to work with the board duo Oliver Kahn/Hasan Salihamidzic – both of them were theirs been relieved of office.
The vacant position of CEO Kahn was quickly filled by the previous CFO Jan-Christian Dreesen, followed about two months later by a new sports director, Christoph Freund. As expected, from March 1st the Austrian will have Max Eberl, a former Bayern player, as his sports director. The German record champions officially announced this on Monday.
Max Eberl: What’s on the to-do list at FC Bayern?

During a supervisory board meeting of FC Bayern München AG, it was unanimously decided that Eberl will become the record champions’ new sports director from March 1, 2024. The 50-year-old has a contract until June 30, 2027 and is looking forward to his new role. “I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is special for me to now return to the club where it all began in a new role,” Eberl is quoted as saying in a club statement. The experienced manager also said that his upcoming “job as sports director is a big challenge” that he would like to tackle “with a lot of respect, humility and anticipation”.
“We are very pleased to have hired Max Eberl as the new sports director,” explained Supervisory Board Chairman Herbert Hainer, who not only values Eberl’s experience, but also his Bayern past. “He not only brings decades of experience in football management, but also started playing football at FC Bayern and became a professional here. We are convinced that he will successfully shape and shape the future of this club.”
New organizational structure at FCB

Eberl’s commitment also results in organizational changes. As the record champions announced, the board of directors of FC Bayern München AG will consist of three positions from July 1, 2024: CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, deputy CEO Michael Diederich (finance & sales) and Max Eberl (board member sports). .
The Munich-based company hopes that the new organizational structure will enable quick coordination and dynamic decisions through lean and efficient structures. In this way you want to “always act quickly”. Until the end of June, the board will still consist of four people: chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen, his deputy chairman Michael Diederich, sports director Max Eberl and marketing director Andreas Jung, who, after 25 years at FCB, will not be extending his contract, which expires in the summer .
It will be exciting to see how Eberl shares tasks with Freund in the future – and how the latter perceives the new constellation or evaluates it for himself. Because all the structures he has created so far could soon be changed again. Especially since Eberl, as usual in this position, will most likely bring a close confidant with him. Steffen Korell, squad planner in Mönchengladbach, is being traded.
Leipzig received 4.5 million euros
Eberl was trained as a professional in FC Bayern’s youth team, but was only used once for Munich in the Bundesliga. Via Bochum and Fürth, Eberl ended up at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he played for a total of six years and initially became a youth director after his career. From 2008, Eberl was sports director at the Fohlen before he asked to terminate his contract at the beginning of 2022.
At the end of 2022, Eberl took over the position of managing director of sports at RB Leipzig, and almost ten months later it was over with the Saxons again due to a “lack of commitment to the club”. Even then, speculation arose about Eberl’s imminent involvement with FC Bayern. The people of Leipzig can still look forward to a hefty transfer fee: According to kicker information, Bayern will pay 4.5 million euros.
