National player Thomas Müller is back in FC Bayern’s starting eleven. If Lothar Matthäus has his way, it should stay that way at the upcoming Bundesliga summit against Bayer Leverkusen. A former teammate of the striker agrees with him.

Record national player Lothar Matthäus is calling for Thomas Müller to be used in the starting eleven in FC Bayern’s Bundesliga top game next Saturday at Bayer Leverkusen. “He has to play for me,” said 62-year-old Matthäus on the talk show “Sky90”.

Müller was recently convincing in the 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach last Saturday. “With the enthusiasm that he transfers to the team and his quality, he is definitely a candidate for the first eleven for me,” said Matthäus before the German football champions’ encounter with the league leaders.

“Bavaria can benefit from this”

“Leverkusen will have a bit of problems if you attack them early. They don’t play long balls much and want to combine out,” said Matthäus. “They have technically good players, but if they are put under a lot of pressure, they will also make mistakes. Bayern can benefit from this and Müller can direct this early pressing.”

After three games on the bench, the 34-year-old Müller was back in coach Thomas Tuchel’s starting lineup against Gladbach. “Especially in a game like that against Leverkusen, you need players up front who can pull the team along and press,” said Müller’s former national team colleague Shkodran Mustafi on “Sky90” and praised the Munich player: “For me as a player, he always helped me , with the way he pulls the team along.”
