Thomas Tuchel’s fate at FC Bayern has been sealed for a week. At the end of the season he will have to pack his bags and leave the club. For the first time since 2012, Munich could not become champions and are currently eight points behind Leverkusen.

Added to this is the 0-1 defeat in the first leg of the round of 16 against Lazio Rome. An exit in the round of 16 would be a disgrace and the last time that happened was in 2019 against Liverpool FC, who later won the final.

A major point of criticism that Tuchel himself admitted: no further development could be seen in the short year he was in office. But that is only one side of the coin. It is also noticeable that the Munich coaching chair has become an ejection seat in recent years. Julian Nagelsmann had to leave in 2023, also due to a lack of further development.

In the case of Hansi Flick, it was mainly due to differences of opinion with sports director Hasan Salihamidžić, but Niko Kovač was also accused of, among other things, a lack of sporting development. So it’s not the coach’s fault at all, but maybe there are completely different reasons?

For this reason, watson had a representative survey carried out by the opinion research company Civey. The first question was: “In your opinion, will FC Bayern’s current problems be solved by current coach Thomas Tuchel leaving the club?

Of the approximately 1,500 respondents, 56 percent voted “no” or “probably no.” 19 percent couldn’t decide, while 25 percent voted “yes” or “more likely yes.”

The mood among football enthusiasts in Germany is clear and does not correspond to that of the new sports director, Max Eberl. At his inaugural press conference on Tuesday, he said that he viewed the decision to separate from Tuchel in the summer as “absolutely right.”

In a second survey that Civey conducted for Watson among football enthusiasts, the question was asked about the reason for FC Bayern’s current problems. Specifically, it should be answered whether “the club’s management or the coach” is seen as the cause of FC Bayern’s problems.

What is striking is that 40 percent did not want to make a commitment and blamed both the club officials and the coach. Eight percent didn’t want to make a decision at all. Nevertheless, 37 percent of those surveyed also voted that the club’s management was the reason for the current situation.

These 37 percent were divided into 23 percent who “definitely” and 14 percent who “rather” blamed the club bosses. In contrast, there were only 15 percent who “somewhat” (seven percent) or “definitely” (eight percent) blamed the coach.

Even if German football fans do not believe that Tuchel is responsible for most of the misery, a new coach will try his luck in Munich in the summer. Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is said to be very popular, but Julian Nagelsmann and Madrid legend Zinédine Zidane are also said to be on the Munich list.

Eberl has already explained the most important skills: The future coach must be able to develop young players. In addition, he had to speak “a language that we all know,” Eberl had made clear, meaning German or English, although French was not an exclusion criterion for him either.

Civey has for Watson from February 21st. Around 1,500 football fans (German citizens aged 18 and over) were surveyed online by February 26, 2024. The results are representative due to quotas and weighting, taking into account the statistical error of 4.7 – 4.8 percentage points (overall result).

Fabian Reese from Hertha BSC is currently one of the hottest stocks in the 2nd Bundesliga. He has six goals and eight assists in 19 games. In addition, week after week there are breathtaking dribbles and speed runs that regularly drive his opponents to despair.
