Felix Götze, brother of World Cup winning goalscorer Mario, plays for third division club Rot-Weiss Essen. He injured his head in the duel at Dynamo Dresden. Bleeding profusely, he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher. What happens next shocks not only him – and it has repercussions.

Felix Götze reacted with disbelief to the events in his club Rot-Weiss Essen’s third division game at Dynamo Dresden (2:2). “Yesterday I cried for the first time in my football career. Not because of the pain, but because it was humiliating to be insulted, spit on and thrown at with a bleeding face and in shock. There are limits and unfortunately they were exceeded yesterday,” Götze wrote on Instagram.

The 26-year-old was taken off the field on a stretcher on Saturday with a bleeding laceration. He was then bid farewell with shouts of “goodbye” from the Dynamo fan block. The paramedics also had to protect him from projectiles from the curve with umbrellas.

“I love this sport and I appreciate all the fans, because without you football wouldn’t be what it is,” Götze continued: “But, despite all the emotions, certain limits simply cannot be exceeded – unfortunately that was the case yesterday . There is a person in every jersey worn down on the pitch!”

Götze was injured during a rescue operation shortly before the end. He collided with Jakob Lemmer from Dresden and was then carried off the pitch.

DFB initiates investigations against Dynamo Dresden

Marcus Uhlig, CEO of Rot-Weiss Essen, said of the incident: “This behavior towards Felix Götze was bottom drawer and has absolutely nothing to do with fair play. That really affects you. Dynamo Dresden is without a doubt a big club, the backdrop is often impressively massive and atmospheric. And it was certainly a minority in the Dresden audience who behaved so disrespectfully towards Felix Götze. But it was so loud that many people noticed it. This crossed a line for me.”

The whole thing has legal repercussions for Dynamo. “I can confirm that the DFB control committee has now initiated an investigation against Dynamo Dresden in this regard and has written to the club for a statement. “By the way, also because of the pyrotechnics that burned down in the first half,” said a spokesman for the German Football Association on Monday.

Dynamo Dresden reported on the allegations on Monday. “Despite all the sporting rivalry, the idea of fair play on and off the pitch should be in the foreground in every situation, especially when players are injured,” said head of communications David Fischer in a club statement. He asked Götze to apologize for the incidents.

Memories of the case of HSV professional Leistner

The case is reminiscent of a bad derailment from 2020, when former HSV professional Toni Leistner was insulted several times by a spectator following the DFB Cup game at Dynamo Dresden in September and he then physically attacked the provocateur in the stands . Because of this, the defensive player, who comes from Dresden and once played for Dynamo, was sentenced to a four-game ban and a fine of 6,000 euros.

HSV lost 1:4, Leistner said he was willing to give an interview on Sky after the game. The interview zone was near the Dynamo fan block. His wife, who was heavily pregnant at the time, was insulted and threatened by a Dresden fan after the game. The bystander said he wanted to attack her so that she would lose her child.

Leistner said at the time that this was also the reason “why the alarm bells went off completely for me. My wife was also sitting in the stadium. For me, my family is always sacred, and that’s why it was clear to me: I have to defend my wife, I want to confront the young man. I was in the tunnel, full of adrenaline, that’s why I went to the block.”
