AZ made it difficult for Feyenoord in the mutual competition match on Sunday, but was not involved in the cup match with the Rotterdam team on Wednesday evening, which they lost 2-0. The Alkmaar club was very disappointed afterwards.

“We were not able to deliver what we did on Sunday in Alkmaar,” said Jordy Clasie after the match in conversation with ESPN. AZ lost 0-1 at home to Feyenoord in the competition on Sunday, but given the look of the game, it deserved more. That was not the case in De Kuip on Wednesday evening.

“We put a lot of pressure on them then,” Clasie continued. “We then only chose the first moment of the build-up, now we let them play to each other six or seven times. Then they can calmly take care of the build-up and find the free man. With and without the ball it was not good for us.”

Midfielder Dani de Wit was mainly disappointed in AZ’s mentality afterwards. “When you play away against Feyenoord, you have to bring the same mentality and intensity as the opponent,” De Wit said.

“Then you have to be just as fierce, then you can play good football. We did not do that today. We did not keep our agreements and chased the ball more than we had the ball.”

AZ loses its last chance for a prize

Due to the defeat, AZ lost the only real chance of a top prize this season. The Alkmaarders previously stranded in the group stage of the Conference League. In the competition, the gap to leader PSV is so great that the national title does not seem to be possible.

There were opportunities in the cup tournament. “It could have been nice. Just look at the clubs that Feyenoord can draw in the semi-finals,” Clasie referred to NEC, SC Cambuur and FC Groningen or Fortuna Sittard, who will play against each other on Thursday.

AZ’s mediocre season cost Pascal Jansen his head earlier this season, but AZ has not yet won in four matches under new coach Maarten Martens. The Alkmaar club is fourth in the Eredivisie after twenty matches.
