Dimayor Decrees Unusual Decision in Response to Fan Protest at Atlético Nacional Game

La Dimayor spoke out this Wednesday, February 14, about the events that occurred in the match in which Millonarios beat Atlético Nacional 0-1 at the Atanasio Girardot stadium, in a game on date 6 of the BetPlay I-2024 League.

The Purslane fans decided to protest the defeat; and in the south stand, some fans set fire and burned chairs and team flags.

The Medellín mayor’s office decided to restrict entry to the south stand for two dates, but then, after four games, access to paraphernalia will be limited to that same area of the Atanasio Girardot stadium.

Thus, the punishment that Dimayor could decree was expected, since many expected strong financial sanctions or more punishment for the fans.

However, the Disciplinary Committee of the Colombian soccer championship made an unusual decision, which has already provoked a reaction from fans of other teams.

According to resolution 009 of 2024, Dimayor decreed the closure and archiving of the disciplinary procedure against Club Atlético Nacional, without imposing any punishment or financial sanction.

According to the referee’s report, “at minute 90+3 of play in the south – east – upper stands a flare (fire) was observed that did not influence the normal development of the game in any way. The match was never interrupted for this reason.”

The Antioquia club rejected the events that occurred, but defended itself: “The Club had no control or prior knowledge of the situation to prevent the events from taking place and acted diligently once they occurred to mitigate them. Likewise, the Club’s guilt and/or negligence is not proven. (…) Although we recognize that the events that are the subject of this investigation did indeed occur, we would like to point out that they did not cause major disorders and that the most important thing, competition, was not affected at any time.” .
