Diego Schwartzman Struggles in Opening Round Defeat at Argentina Open

The Argentine Diego Schwartzman, far from his best version, was eliminated from the Argentina Open, a tournament that he knew how to win in 2021, by losing in the opening round to a tennis player who emerged from the classification, the Colombian Daniel Elahí Galán 2-6, 6-1 , 6-4.

The “Peque”, relegated to 116th place in the ATP world ranking, performed from highest to lowest and paid for it with a new defeat in an initial round, this time against the Colombian Galán (80th), after two hours and 19 minutes, on the central court of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

Schwartzman, who had also been a finalist at the Argentina Open in 2019 (lost to the Italian Marco Cecchinato) and 2022 (fell to the Norwegian Casper Ruud), had just lost quickly at the Córdoba Open, in the opening round against the Argentine Román Andrés Burruchaga .

“I played a good first set, but then I couldn’t sustain it. I’m sad that this happened to me here in Buenos Aires, I thought I could win the match, but it didn’t happen,” analyzed the protagonist in the press conference after his defeat .

“I rescue how people treated me, the support is greater because they try to get me out of a bad sporting moment, I think that because of that help I played a couple more games. We will see how far I can stretch it this way,” Schwartzman expressed sadly.

“I don’t know what’s happening, it’s like during the game different issues appear that make me do poorly. This year I had the hope of improving, of doing well and we’ll see if in the coming months I can find solutions,” concluded the “Little one.”

For his part, on the auxiliary court number 2 of the complex located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo, the Argentine nationalized Italian Luciano Darderi (76th) confirmed his excellent moment and settled in the round of 16 after beating the Buenos Aires Mariano Navone (117th ), emerged from the “qualy”, 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and a quarter of play.

Darderi, born in Villa Gesell and champion last Sunday at the Córdoba Open, will play in the round of 16 against the winner of the match that will close Tuesday’s day between the Argentine Sebastián Báez (30) and the Spanish Bernabé Zapata Miralles (78) .

“I had an incredible week, I’m just falling. I didn’t expect to be so loose and physically well, I’m very happy and I hope to continue like this in the future,” Darderi commented shortly after his victory.

“It means a lot to me to have won in Córdoba and advance here in Buenos Aires, I had put together a Challengers calendar and now this modifies everything but I know that I need to continue adding victories,” concluded Darderi, 21 years old, who is ensuring for the moment to enter to Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the year to be played from the last week of May in Paris.

The other Argentines who won were Federico Coria against Sebastián Ofner 7-5 4-6 7-5, Camilo Ugo Carabelli against Juan Pablo Varillas 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and Sebastián Báez against Bernabé Zapata Miralles 6- 3, 6-3.
