DFL protests: Protests almost cause the game at Hertha to be canceled

After an ongoing protest against the investor plans of the German Football League (DFL), the second division game Hertha against HSV almost had to be canceled on Saturday evening. The fans threw countless tennis balls from the Hertha corner onto the field in the second half. “Finally stop investor madness, whether in the DFL or in the clubs,” said one banner.

After the game had already been interrupted for around 20 minutes, referee Daniel Schlager sent the players off the field after they had initially kept warm on the pitch. In total, the interruption lasted more than 30 minutes.

Hertha managing director Thomas Herrich criticized the length of the fan protest: “I completely understand the criticism. It is completely legitimate to take actions and express criticism. The manner is different. That went on for far too long for me. ” The fact that the game ended with a 2-1 defeat for Hertha had nothing to do with the interruption.

Herrich fears financial consequences for the club after the protest. “This will result in a severe penalty,” he said. They now want to talk to the fans.
