This decision is a thunderbolt!

It was a big victory for the Ultras, who had been protesting for weeks against investor involvement (one billion for eight percent of TV revenues over 20 years). The league caves to tennis balls and banners.

► What are the reasons for the withdrawal?

In the official announcement, DFL boss Hans-Joachim Watzke says: “A successful continuation of the process no longer seems possible in view of current developments.”

Across Germany, fan scenes almost caused games to be canceled through protests following the decision to look for investors.

Watzke himself submitted a request to the executive committee to cancel the investor process, surprising everyone else.

Numerous first division teams wanted to break off the process because they are afraid of an escalation.

According to BILD information, Watzke also asked the DFL executive committee a vote of confidence. All members continued to tell him so.

► What role does Hanover boss Kind play?

Watzke: “Nevertheless, it should not be overlooked that this vote lacks broad acceptance due to the events surrounding Hannover 96.”

Means: The supposedly decisive yes vote from Hanover boss Martin Kind (79) causes too much doubt about the vote. As 96 managing director, Kind would have voted against the parent club’s vote. And thus broke the 50+1 rule.

► How do the clubs react?

The board of VfB Stuttgart said: “We welcome this understandable decision by the DFL executive committee, which allows all of us who love football to come together again.

Robin Krakau, board member and spokesman for Hannover 96 eV: “Due to the situation over the last few weeks, it is the only right decision. Since we had already instructed Mr. Kind to vote no, for us it is also the true result and a decision in our opinion.”

Thomas E. Herrich (59), Managing Director of Hertha BSC: “We support this step by the DFL Presidium and consider it to be the right decision in the overall situation. What will now be decisive is how the DFL and its clubs will align themselves in the future and what long-term objectives will be agreed upon that can sustainably strengthen the leagues.”

► What happens now?

Watzke: “The DFL Presidium and the management will invite you to club discussions in the next few weeks in order to discuss conclusions from the process together.”

This means: The DFL and the clubs in the first and second leagues are facing an ordeal! In the worst case scenario, the leagues could split up (which would be legally possible).
