The Panamanian works on developing good communication with the pitching

Panamanian Iván Herrera knows the importance of a good relationship between the catcher and pitcher, it is the driving force of a lineup, which is why he has worked on that aspect with the shooters of the San Luis Cardinals, especially this year when he has the great opportunity to be on the big team during the 2024 season.

On Monday, he paired with relievers Giovanny Gallegos and Andrew Kittredge, as well as prospect Sem Robberse in the team’s exhibition game against the Miami Marlins.
“Guys like to pitch to him,” manager Oliver Mármol told www.stltoday.com about Herrera.

“He does a good job when it comes to framing. The gap that he was able to close was his ability to prepare before the game and have a really good game plan that he can stick to, but also make adjustments from that game plan. I think there is a progression in that,” he added of the development of corduroy.

Herrera hopes the playing time will help foster his connection with the pitching staff.

“It helps. The more you understand, the more you understand their way of thinking and we are on the same page. At the end of the day, that’s what we want. We want to be on the same page so that we don’t fail each other and they feel comfortable,” he explained .

The canalero strove to maximize the bullpen sessions he had with Major League pitchers.

“I tried to take advantage of that, I tried to work as if it were a game,” he said. Although he will practically be part of the big team, Herrera has focused on the preseason, in the same way as previous years.

““I don’t think I have a different expectation. My expectation is to come here, play hard in every game and do my job. “I think it’s been the same as the last few years.”
