Second division professional Derrick Köhn from Hannover 96 is moving to the top Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul in a million-dollar transfer one day before the top game at Hamburger SV. On Thursday evening, Hannover announced the immediate change.

According to consistent media reports, both clubs had agreed on a transfer fee the evening before, which, including bonus payments, could rise to around four million euros if Galatasaray has sporting successes. At the same time, Hannover 96 secured ten percent of the resale value through a clause should Köhn bring in a transfer fee for the 23-time Turkish champions in the next few years.

“Especially as a second division team, one of our goals must of course be to generate surpluses on the transfer market – we have succeeded in doing that very well here,” said sports director Marcus Mann. The left-back landed in Istanbul on Thursday morning for the medical check and the signing of the contract. 96 will compete in the northern duel against Hamburger SV on Friday evening (6.30 p.m., in the live center at NDR.de).

96 coach Leitl criticizes different transfer windows

96 coach Leitl expressed his understanding at lunchtime for the player’s willingness to change and the club’s economic constraints. However, the 46-year-old criticized the different transfer windows in the different leagues. With a uniform regulation we would come closer to “fair play,” said Leitl. In Turkey the transfer deadline only ends this Friday.

In Köhn, Lower Saxony is losing an absolute top performer – and long-running favorite. The 25-year-old appeared in all 20 league games for the “Reds” this season, scoring three goals and assisting six. The Hamburg native went through all of HSV’s youth teams and moved to the second team of record champions Bayern Munich in 2017. Köhn came on the leash in 2022 via Willem II in the Netherlands.

96 is without a left-back

Hannover is now in the middle of the promotion race in the second division without a left-back because Köhn’s representative Brooklyn Ezeh has not trained with the professional team since November.

Köhn could play in the Champions League

Galatasaray was urgently looking for a full-back because Frenchman Sacha Boey moved to FC Bayern Munich in January and ex-Leipzig player Angelino moved to AS Roma. Before the 25th matchday in the Süperlig, the club is level with league leaders and city neighbors Fenerbahce (both 63 points) in second place. Köhn could be heading to the Champions League next season.
