Debunking the Hoax: Vinicius Did Not Accuse Entire Mestalla Stadium of Racism

No, Vinicius did not tell the judge that the entire Mestalla used racist insults at him. It’s false. And this was demonstrated this Wednesday by the EFE Agency, which has had access to the statement that the footballer made in the Plaza de Castilla courts on October 5. This is a hoax originating from the lawyer of one of the three accused. But it’s not true. The EFE transcript reflects that Vinicius pointed to a group of fans and spoke of a “climate of exaltation” but, before the judge, he never accused the entire stadium.

The investigation phase is now approaching its final stretch, so it will be known in a short time whether the case is moving towards a trial or not. Directed by Court number 10 of Valencia, there are three main suspects and a key date: next March 7, several witnesses will testify who, according to sources in the operation, point to determinants. In his statement, Vinicius claimed to have identified the perpetrators, something that he staged on the Mestalla grass itself, pointing his finger at them. An image that went around the world.

EFE’s access to the transcript dismantles the theory that the footballer had accused, before the judge, the entire Mestalla of uttering racist insults at him. For many weeks, this has been one of the great hoaxes and breeding ground for an atmosphere that, this Saturday, is expected to be red hot. Superdeporte assured that the cheering stands have prepared a song to welcome the player: “[…] He arrived in Valencia and the story ended. The problem is that he is stupid and it was never because of his color.” Added to this is Valencia’s ban on Netflix accessing the stadium to continue filming a documentary about the player. Valencia has been preparing for this match for eight months.

Reconstruction of the facts

It all happened on May 21, during matchday 35 of the League. Valencia was facing relegation and Madrid had just been eliminated from the Champions League (4-0 against City). The racist insults were heard from the bus’s arrival at the stadium, something that made LaLiga take action on the matter and report it. This complaint ended up being filed after the National Police reported that there was no way to identify the perpetrators, as the insults came from the ambient sound and there was no visual of their faces.

Already on the field, the aforementioned insults and racist gestures occurred. De Burgos Bengoetxea, referee that afternoon, had to stop the game due to the explosion of a blushing supernova. And it was still the first part. In the second, the matter got worse: Vinicius, faced with the “climate of exaltation,” went so far as to notify the National Police of who was making gestures at him imitating a monkey. It was then that the referee activated the anti-racism protocol and was notified over the public address system.

While this was happening, several Madrid players were confronting some fans located in the cheering stands area. Already after the game and thanks to the images from the media, provided to the authorities, at least three subjects were identified, who are under investigation. That same night, Valencia announced his expulsion “for life.”

Worry about Saturday

Club sources do not hide what is evident: there is concern about what could happen this Saturday. Not only because the racist episodes could be repeated, but because the temperature surrounding the match is rising a little more every day and, now that the day before is approaching, the thermometers are aiming to skyrocket. Vinicius has decided not to make any statements, focusing exclusively on the match, but the concern exists and goes from the club to the locker room. After 72 hours, at least, one of the big hoaxes surrounding the case has fallen: Vinicius did not tell the judge that the racist insults were from all over Mestalla. That is false.
