Damir Canadi: Ready for a New Challenge in Football

Damir Canadi has been without a club for more than half a year – with recharged batteries, the Austrian coach now seems to want to get back into the football business.

In an interview with the “Krone”, the 53-year-old looks back on the past milestones in his career and says he is ready for a new challenge.

“The fire in me burns again”

“I spent a lot of time with my family and friends. Now I’m fully motivated, the fire in me is burning again,” said the former Bundesliga coach. Through a two-time commitment to SCR Altach (2013-2016, 2021) and SK Rapid (2026-2017), Canadi already has plenty of experience at home, but the former professional has also earned a few spurs abroad.

After starting his career as a coach, Canadi gradually climbed up the career ladder: from the first point of contact, the Austro coach made it from the regional league to the Bundesliga and, after Altach, also to the European Cup with Atromitos Athens. “My career was very special, I had to prove myself everywhere. But you almost never have a break to recharge your batteries and recharge your batteries, you are also responsible for squad planning. 365 days a year, a lot of people forget that.”

Don’t be afraid of “uncomfortable tasks”

Canadi experienced “instructive experiences” during his stations in Hütteldorf and Nuremberg, although great success was not achieved. “Of course there were good and not so good decisions, but I don’t regret anything. It’s my path and I’m proud of it,” says the Viennese, who was most recently under contract with Croatian club HNK Sibenik.

On the Adriatic coast, Canadi experienced sporting ups and downs – with Sibenik he had to cope with relegation to the second division, which was offset by the sensational reaching of the Croatian Cup final. Afterwards, the Austrian wanted to consciously take some time off.

With new enthusiasm and drive, Canadi is now setting his sights on a new task. The temporary lack of precedence in the coaching industry is not a stumbling block. “There are offers on the table.” Where the ex-Rapid coach will go remains unclear. A new job could be in your home country or outside of it. Canadi doesn’t want to “rule anything out” and says confidently: “I don’t shy away from uncomfortable tasks if people trust me.”
