Cuba Upsets United States in Historic AmeriCup Qualifying Match

Cuba played a bad trick in the United States this Sunday, February 25 as part of the qualifiers for the AmeriCup 2025. For the first time in the history of this competition.

If the team of former Limougeaud Jerome Allen had beaten this same Cuban team three days earlier in Osceola County in Florida, the story was quite different in Havana this Sunday. Quickly left behind, the selection of Elfrid Payton (sent off in the first half) was at -16 at the end of the first quarter (26-10).

Although they got closer, the Americans never really worried the locals who have high-level players in Europe, such as Howard Sant-Roos (6 points at 1/6 on shots, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 32 minutes) or Jasiel Rivero (11 points at 3/8, 9 rebounds and 3 assists). It is however Pedro Bombinoplayer in the Argentine championship, who finished top scorer with 19 points in 20 minutes coming off the bench.

With this result, all AmeriCup Group D teams are tied with one win and one loss. Indeed, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico also each won a round in their home-and-away duel.
